Discover the art of Raku and Horsehair Pottery at Yu Tang Ceramics!
In this three hour workshop, students will experience the art of Raku and horsehair pottery. Raku is characterized by the removal of a clay object from the kiln at the height of the firing and causing it to cool very rapidly. Pieces are placed in a reduction environment with combustibles to allow for the glazes on the piece to mature. Horsehair pottery is also done in a similar manner in which pieces are taken out of the kiln at peak temperatures and left “naked” (no glaze) upon which organic carbon based materials can be applied to burn into the piece leaving intricate details left by materials such as horsehair, leaves, and feathers.
Students provide their own bisque ware and may bring 2 “small” pieces (no more than 6”), as well as any materials they wish to bring. Glazes and various organic materials are provided.
*This workshop is exclusivley for any alumni of the studio, current students, and studio members only and is not open to the general public. This workshop is limited to eight participants.
This workshop will also serve as a demo for the Washington Clay Arts Association Fall Clay Crawl. As such, there may be studio visitors watching the process, but direct participation is limited to the Yu Tang community.
Date: 10/3/2026 1 - 4 pm
Cost: $75
